Millions of people are learning foreign languages with Duolingo’s green bird.

English, French, Spanish and more: More than 40 languages can be learned with the language learning app Duolingo, including the “Star Trek” language Klingon. But the employees are shaking right now.

Because some employees have to vacate their desks; they are being replaced by artificial intelligence (AI). Duolingo laid off ten percent of its temporary employees by the end of 2023, CNN wrote. It is unknown how many employees are affected.

Not all of these workers will be replaced by artificial intelligence. According to Duolingo, no full-time employees are affected by these changes. But one thing is clear: The app is increasingly relying on AI: “Generative AI is accelerating our work by helping us create new content much faster,” CEO Luis von Ahn wrote in a letter to shareholders in November, for example.

Following the cancellations, Duolingo is using AI more than before to generate sentences for lessons, create lists of acceptable translations, and review user error reports to fix errors faster. However, it is said that people are still used to controlling artificial intelligence.

Practice with chatbot

Duolingo is already relying on the new technology: Since last March, the new “Duolingo Max” subscription level has been available in some places for around $30 per month. The Duolingo app depends on GPT-4 from OpenAI. App users can practice with the chatbot and learn why an answer is right or wrong.

According to its own information, Duolingo has 24.2 million users worldwide who use the app every day. 5.8 million is paid for additional services.

Advert

CH Media also reported on the layoffs. Severin Hacker from Zug, co-founder of Duolingo, said in an interview last March: “Humans continue to be the best language teachers. But many people do not have access to a teacher or cannot afford it. Thanks to artificial intelligence, it is now good and affordable “We can offer an affordable alternative.” However, in general, Swiss bosses are quite skeptical about artificial intelligence. (kae)
