Escape the gray everyday life in Zurich and relax in the sun-drenched mountains. This is exactly what party king Reto Hanselmann (42) likes to do most in the winter months. Then the Zurich resident heads to his 5.5-room apartment in Davos GR for the weekend. The organizer of the event (Hanselmann’s Wiesn and Season of the Witch) established a second home here eight years ago. “Mountains have been my place of strength and peace since my childhood. “I can switch off and relax here like nowhere else.” The 160 square meter apartment is furnished in elegant Alpine elegance. The trained chef hand-selected all the matching furniture, picture frames and decorative accessories worth 200,000 francs. «Interior design is my passion. “I love being creative in my home.”

Torn condom packets under the bed

During World Economic Forum (WEF) week, Reto Hanselmann’s luxury apartment would be a sought-after rental property and could fetch him around 20,000 to 30,000 francs. But the party organizer does not allow him. “I rented my previous apartment for years during WEF and had very unpleasant experiences.” When he returned to his apartment after the temporary tenants had left, he was allowed to buy particularly intimate items from wealthy tenants. “I had to fish out strange thongs from the pool or collect torn condom packets from under my bed. I found this disgusting. “I’d rather give up 20,000 francs and have the untouched privacy of my home instead.”

“We need to talk about pronouns!”

Hanselmann had rented his former three-room flat in Davos Dorf to CEOs and executives for several years, earning around 6,000 francs each time. Today the entrepreneur prefers to call his new apartment, worth two million francs for himself and his friends, his “second home”. “I don’t want to worry about who uses my toilet or my bed anymore.” Despite his bad experiences, Reto Hanselmann does not condemn apartment owners who rented out their properties during the WEF period. «I can understand everyone who uses these lucrative days to finance their stay. As long as the landlord allows it and there is demand, I don’t see a problem. “Also the agents who let the properties do a really good job, so I haven’t had any problems.”

Disneyland for companies

Reto Hanselmann’s apartment is in the immediate vicinity of the Davos Congress Centre. The party organizer can visit the pavilions and temporary headquarters of various companies on foot. “Fascinating. A brand new city is being built for WEF in Davos. Everything is buried in a background. Every house has a new facade. Even churches are turning into live TV venues. Davos will become Disneyland for companies,” he said. WEF, health resort and Switzerland “Big names from culture, business and politics come together here: Brad Pitt, Elon Musk and even Volodymyr Selensky. For a week, Davos and therefore Switzerland will be the focal point of world events.”

Hanselmann also enjoys taking advantage of the winter sports center during the economic peak. “These days the hillsides are emptier than ever. While the streets in Davos are completely clogged, there is no need to queue anywhere for the cable cars. Every descent and every cross-country ski trail is yours.” Reto Hanselmann has recently been interested in cross-country skiing as well as regular skiing. «I love cross-country skiing. You are connected to yourself and nature. You reach deserted places by passing through beautiful routes. “This balances me out.”

Après-ski is no longer “as steep as before”

At noon Hanselmann retreats to the heights. “I like to go up the mountain to eat at Jakobshorn or Parsenn. Then I meet my friends and do après ski. “Though today it’s not as steep as before,” he says and laughs.

In the evenings, Reto Hanselmann likes to relax at home with friends or spend time alone. “I really enjoy it here. I have parties in Zurich, I go there every weekend and I might be in Davos.” Still, the Zurich native dreams of having his own party series in the mountain metropolis of Graubundan. “This is still missing from my activity list. “A Hanselmann party in Davos, maybe even during the WEF, that would be the absolute highlight for me.”
