Rock stars tend to be drug addicts. Elon Musk (52) also sees himself as a rock star rather than an entrepreneur: According to the “Wall Street Journal”, Musk’s drug consumption has reached a level that increasingly worries the bosses of his companies Tesla and SpaceX.

Accordingly, Musk is said to regularly consume LSD, cocaine, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms and especially ketamine. According to the Wall Street Journal, other guests at parties where Musk celebrated while under the influence of drugs were required to sign a confidentiality agreement. However, the escapades clearly don’t stay under the hood. Musk’s ketamine consumption was already made public during the summer. But now its full extent is known. Musk claimed at the time that he was directed by a doctor to take ketamine to treat depression.

Musk had to take a drug test

Musk’s drug use jeopardizes not only his health but also the economic success of his companies. This is especially true for SpaceX: The space company has multibillion-dollar contracts with US authorities. Among other things, Musk transports astronauts to the International Space Station on behalf of the United States.

These and other lucrative contracts could be jeopardized by Musk’s drug use: Regular drug testing is the order of the day at companies with public contracts in the US. In 2018, Musk publicly smoked marijuana on the podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience”, which triggered an investigation against him by US authorities.

“Emails with a view” to the holiday destination

Beyond any possible regulatory ramifications, their companies’ top employees are concerned about whether Musk can run their companies given his alleged drug use or whether he could endanger them with his repeated public outbursts.

According to the US newspaper, a senior executive at Tesla refused to be re-elected to the board of directors years ago because he could no longer tolerate Musk’s drug use.

But it’s unclear whether Musk’s volatile and sometimes problematic behavior is actually related to his alleged drug use. Sleep deprivation and overwork can also be causes. Musk has publicly stated several times that he spends nights in the office instead of at home.

He schedules meetings for midnight and rarely gives himself time off. “A vacation means so many things,” Musk once said at a court hearing. “This is what I call emails with a view.”

Musk has yet to comment publicly on the new revelations about drug use. However, he wrote on social media platform X that US gossip portal “TMZ” has higher standards than “Wall Street Journal”. Another recent post is unclear as to whether it references research. Musk just writes “lol” (laughs out loud).
