Twelve gigatonnes: Listed companies emit more CO2

class = “sc-cffd1e67-0 fmXrkB”>

Listed companies worldwide emit a total of 12 gigatonnes of CO2 in their operations (Scope 1) in 2023. This was more than a tenth of that in 2022. (Symbolic image)

But this is only CO2– Emissions caused by a company during operations (Scope 1), for example through oil heating or vehicle fleet. If greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation (Scope 2) and greenhouse gas emissions along the value chain from raw material extraction to disposal (Scope 3) are also taken into account, emissions are approximately five times higher.

The goals of the Paris Climate Agreement are moving further away. According to MSCI, only 22 percent of publicly traded companies worldwide are currently in line with the 1.5 degree target. (SDA)
