“It drives better, but it doesn’t get out of control,” the Swiss Association of Automobile Importers said in a statement on Wednesday. The automobile market in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein grew by 11.6 percent in 2023 compared to 2022, but is still below the long-term pre-pandemic level.

In particular, according to information, a total of 252,214 passenger cars were registered in traffic in 2023. In the years before the pandemic, there were approximately 300,000 registrations per year on average.

The below-average 2023 auto year can be attributed to weak demand due to the economic situation. It is said that private households, in particular, have been quite reluctant to purchase cars in the last twelve months.

Auto Switzerland expects the market to grow further in the new year. The figure of 300,000 new registrations will likely remain “unattainable” in 2024.
