Traffic volume at Zurich Airport increased again in 2023: The increase compared to the previous year was 14.5 percent. This means that it is still missing about 10 percent of the 2019 level before the outbreak of the corona pandemic.

A total of 241,005 aircraft took off and landed in Zurich last year, according to figures on the airport website reviewed by the AWP news agency. In 2019, there were 268,968 machines.

As a result of travel restrictions to control the coronavirus outbreak, flight movements in 2020 fell to just 40 percent of the 2019 level. Air traffic has recovered steadily since then – in 2022, the difference compared to 2019 was around a fifth.

The highest traffic volume in 2023 was achieved on October 6, when a total of 831 flights were operated to and from Zurich at the start of the autumn holidays. After months, July, which is the summer holiday month, reaches its peak before October.

But the latest breakthrough in December was also impressive: the airport recorded a total of 18,682 flight movements during the Christmas month; This figure is approximately 8 percent more than the previous year. This means it was only around 6 percent below the pre-crisis level in December. The busiest day of December was Friday, December 22, 2023.

Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for December and the whole year on January 15, 2024.

Flight movement figures at Zurich Airport used for this article are based on daily updated statistics, with all flights recorded in accordance with instrument flight rules. This traffic, called IFR traffic, includes cargo, business and private flights in addition to scheduled services. The number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft used or capacity utilization. (SDA)
