Last winter, mountain railways recorded 19 percent fewer guests at the start of the winter, after a 28 percent increase the previous winter, reaching a pre-Covid-19 pandemic high. The increase at the beginning of the winter season is 12.2 percent according to the 5-year average and 18.7 percent according to the 10-year average.

As the Grisons mountain railways explained, thanks to technical snowmaking and snowfall in December, the mountain railways managed to open early and reach very good frequencies in the previous season. The range of slopes available is very wide and the large number of guests is well distributed across the ski areas.

In addition to the tracks, other snow activities such as winter walking, sledding and various events attract great interest from the guests. The very warm “terrace weather” also caused satisfactory restaurant sales.

At the end of December 2023, the Central region (including Arosa Lenzerheide) saw a 32.4 percent increase in guest frequencies, above the overall increase of 20.6 percent, according to the mountain railway monitor of the industrial association Bergbahnen Graubeğen (BBGR). the Surselva region, with an increase of 25.5 percent, and the Davos Klosters region, with an increase of 22.2 percent. The Engadine recorded a smaller increase: 9.2 percent in the Lower Engadine and 6.8 percent in the Upper Engadine.

Traffic revenue during the festive season accounts for approximately 20 to 25 percent of the total traffic revenue of the Grisons mountain railways, and 90 percent of this revenue is still generated in winter, according to the statement. (SDA)
