The first – virtual – gold medal of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris has already been awarded: the French hotel industry associations awarded it to the government of the Île-de-France region, where the French capital Paris is located. In the “wage frenzy” category.
The reason: Paris’ current tourist tax will triple from 2024. The price range currently varies from 25 cents per person for basic camping accommodation to 5.50 euros for luxury hotels. The 200 percent increase will clearly make accommodation in Paris more expensive for visitors from 2024.
For a guest staying in a five-star hotel, the tax can be over 15 euros per night. This value is quite high compared to tourist taxis in other European capitals. French hoteliers see this as a competitive disadvantage.
Health increase with Olympia
Authorities reached an initial agreement to increase wages in September. Since then, hoteliers’ loud reservations have been ignored. More: The budget proposal is expected to pass the Parliament without a vote this week.
The increase in wages will add approximately 423 million euros to the regional government’s coffers. This aims to finance urgently needed improvement in public transport infrastructure. Hoteliers criticize that only 200 million euros will be needed for this.
Hypocritical hoteliers
But hoteliers’ anger seems hypocritical. As always with major sporting events – greetings from the European Championships in Germany – hotel prices in Paris are booming during the Olympic Games.
The price of a three-star hotel such as Ibis, which usually costs around 80 euros per night, will rise up to 700 euros in August 2024 (example: Ibis Style Rue de Crimée). The four-star Hotel Beaumont in the tourist area of Montmartre costs around 220 euros for a weekend in the summer and 1210 euros during the Olympic Games.
According to the Paris Tourism Office, average hotel prices in Paris in July 2024 are 314 percent higher than in July 2023. The increase in tourism tax no longer has much of an impact.
It is also urgent to improve public transport. Paris is already at the limit in terms of traffic and fears it will completely collapse during the Olympic Games. So much so that many Parisians advise against participating in the Olympics. Moreover, even subway prices are reflected in the games.
