No more ticket problems!: Federal Transport Agency reprimands SBB

Buying the ticket a few seconds late: In such cases, problems always occur.

Buy tickets quickly before or during departure: Sometimes this works just fine, but sometimes it doesn’t: SBB control staff acts harshly if the ticket is purchased even a few seconds late. Many passengers are fined heavily and placed on national fare evasion registers.

Not only SBB, but most public transport companies comply with this regulation: This is what it says in the Alliance Swiss Pass tariff regulations.

Now the Federal Transport Agency (BAV) wants to put an end to this practice. As Marcel Hepp, vice president of legal, told Tamedia newspapers, SBB & Co. is actually running an illegal practice. “If the confirmation on the smartphone occurs shortly after take-off due to delay, that person should not suffer any disadvantage as a result.”

Easing has actually been in effect since 2012

Poor cell phone reception doesn’t make anyone a ticket dodger. This is no longer the customer’s responsibility. And BAV goes so far as to say that a family who has just boarded the train with luggage and a stroller, for example, should be allowed to buy a ticket at departure. The most important criterion: Buying tickets must be a priority.

BAV is the supervisory body of public transport companies. According to Tamedia, BAV intervened with SBB in 2012 and persuaded them to relax the control regime.

Hepp announced that BAV will soon notify the Alliance Swiss Pass organization in writing about this issue. A spokesman for the organization told Tamedia newspapers: “We remain committed to our practices and will carefully review the proposed letter from the Federal Transport Agency.” (what is that)
