Airports get busy during the Christmas holidays. Zurich Airport is expecting 90,000 passengers on peak day, December 22. They want to visit their loved ones or escape the heat during the holidays. Therefore there is a risk of long waiting times.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport has a simple solution for this: a so-called runway. You can book a free time slot in Terminal 1 to access security control. Waiting in lines at security checkpoints is now a thing of the past. According to Blick reader reporters, you can pass the security check in a very short time.
“Our measurements showed that more than 90 per cent of runway users required less than ten minutes for the security check,” an airport spokesman said. The offer is particularly valuable in combination with self-check-in and self-luggage drop-off.
It is also possible spontaneously
8000 slots can be reserved every day. “This means that up to a quarter of guests leaving Terminal 1 can use security control by appointment, even on peak travel days,” the spokesperson told Blick.
Passengers can book a time slot as early as seven days before departure. This can also be done spontaneously: a time slot can be booked one hour before departure for flights to the Schengen area, and an hour and a half in advance for non-Schengen flights. “We are receiving very positive feedback and a lot of praise,” the spokesperson continued.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport became the first airport in Europe to introduce the system in August 2022. Other airports in Germany, such as Düsseldorf and Hamburg, followed suit. In Europe, Schiphol in Amsterdam and Fiumicino in Rome now also require appointments for security checks.
Zurich Airport relies on other measures
This is not the case at Zurich Airport. In response to Blick’s question, a spokesperson said, “A suitable concept for this is not planned at Zurich Airport at the moment.” However, passengers will now be able to check the suggested arrival times at the airport on the website.
Various measures were taken at the airport at the beginning of the summer, together with the Zurich cantonal police responsible for security checks. “According to our reports, the measures implemented are having an impact; waiting times are now back to normal,” the spokesperson continued.
