There is no statistical evidence for a Christmas surcharge, says Pascal Seiler, who comes to SRF from the economic research center at ETH Zurich (KOF). KOF analyzes hundreds of selected products and services and shows when prices are falling or rising.

Game consoles and sparkling wines

While the prices of televisions fell by 22 percent, the prices of computers, photography and video devices were also affected by 19 percent. Sparkling wines are also 27 percent cheaper in December. There is nothing stopping you from celebrating New Year’s Eve.

Better wait until January

On the other hand, it is better to buy clothes in January. Clothing and shoe prices fell 29 percent in January. On the one hand, Christmas shopping is over, on the other hand, clothes are seasonal items. That’s why retailers offer generous discounts in January; so you’re not stuck with warm winter clothes. There is a second wave of discounts on summer products in July.

However, winter sports products such as skiing and snowboarding are also cheaper in January. The highest demand here is in November and December, when it snows. So if you want to buy new winter equipment, it is better to wait until the new year.

Dealers and sellers avoid sharp price increases. After all, they don’t want to upset their customers. KOF notes that in an inflationary environment, consumers will be more likely to accept price increases.
