Italian tax authorities accused the company of failing to pay tax on short-term rentals in Italy for five years. The company announced on Wednesday that the agreement between Airbnb and Italian authorities covers the years 2017-2021.
In Italy, homeowners must pay 21 percent tax on income from short-term rentals. In 2017, a uniform tax on rental income was introduced in Italy. At the time, Airbnb filed a lawsuit against the promotion. However, the European Court of Justice rejected the company’s claims almost a year ago and confirmed its obligation to collect and pay the tax. Milan prosecutor’s office accused Airbnb of not paying this tax until 2021.
Airbnb has collected nearly 3.7 billion euros over five years, according to tax authorities, estimating the housing platform’s unpaid taxes at 779 million euros. A judge ordered the seizure of that amount in early November.
“Italy is an important market for Airbnb,” he said in the statement. The company therefore wants to maintain “constructive relations with the Italian authorities for 2022 and 2023.” Initially, there was no official information from the Italian tax authorities about the agreement and the process.
