The search for training positions for tomorrow’s skilled workers is arguably easier than ever. On the one hand, this is due to the decreasing number of students in the country for years. So there is already high demand for apprentices. And now they, too, are taking advantage of the skilled worker shortage. As figures from Yousty show, many employers appear to be embarking on a training drive. At the end of August, approximately 10 percent more apprenticeship positions were advertised on Switzerland’s largest vocational training portal than in the previous year and 25 percent more than in August 2021. “Among the sought-after apprentice positions filled early last year, they are clearly even more available this year,” says Yousty spokesperson Stefanie Näf.
Figures on completed apprenticeship contracts will not be available until the spring. However, filling apprenticeship positions in summer 2024 is still in the hot phase. Although the majority of apprenticeships in retail sales professionals (EFZ) will only start in January, the field is already experiencing high levels of demand. In second place is the field of business management at EFZ, where, according to Näf, more than half of all apprenticeship positions are already filled. In the occupational category, chief EFZ is in third place, followed by healthcare specialist EFZ (“FaGe”), retail assistant EBA and logistician EFZ.
FaGe’s apprenticeship range has continued to grow in recent years. “There is no sign of that yet this year,” says Näf. To date, there have been 15 percent more apprenticeships in the maintenance profession.
Courses organized for the first time also add to the wide range on offer. “The latest training courses include solar installer EFZ and solar installer EBA, recycling specialist EFZ, building technology planner EFZ and digital business developer EFZ,” Thomas Hess (57), managing director of the Zurich SME and trade association, explains to Blick. taking”. These are all training courses with the best career opportunities.
Specific job titles or specializations change every year due to changes in the business world. For example, from January 2024, the new “Rail Transport Specialist EFZ” job will replace the previous Logistician (Transport) EFZ job. The old designation of hotel specialist EFZ no longer exists. Now this: EFZ, the hotel industry cleaning specialist.
More and more applications
Some industries have to fight particularly hard for young talent: “Companies have difficulty finding suitable apprentices, especially in the catering and hotel industries,” says Näf. It is the case, for example, that office and secretarial jobs fill relatively quickly, but technical occupations in industry and construction (such as carpenters, foremen or plumbers) are still difficult to find.
Yousty’s data also shows where it is easier to look for apprentices: So far, young people are mostly looking for the professions business clerk EFZ, computer scientist EFZ, medical practice assistant EFZ, retail trade specialist EFZ to start their apprenticeships. 2024 will focus on designing shopping experiences and draftsman EFZ.
Potential students are becoming an increasingly scarce commodity: low birth rates are currently driving the apprenticeship market. According to Näf, you don’t feel any of this yet at Yousty: “Every year there are more young people wanting to take an apprenticeship with us, there are more views and application clicks, there are also more applications than in the previous year.” However, it is easier for young people to get apprenticeships: “The apprenticeship market is clearly less competitive.”
Another indication that it is easier to find a place to study today: Young people are sending fewer and fewer applications per capita. Last year there were an average of 8.4 applications. Pressure in all education professions is significantly lower than in 2019.
