This is bad for the climate: Switzerland ranks 21st in the Climate Change Performance Index 2024. Last year, 15th was enough, but now he’s not even in the top 20. Even if we wanted to, we are no longer among the high-flyers when it comes to climate protection.
Others perform significantly better than Switzerland when comparing climate protection between countries. Countries such as the Philippines, Morocco and India are significantly higher in the rating. Even Germany makes it into the top 20, as does the entire EU. A small consolation: The situation in our other neighboring countries, France, Italy and Austria, is even worse.
The pedestal remains empty
The climate protection index, published by non-governmental organizations Germanwatch, Newclimate Institute and Climate Action Network, is a ranking of 63 countries and the EU as a whole, responsible for more than 90 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
The current rankings are presented each year during the UN Climate Change Conference, currently held in Dubai. The top three are not awarded because none of the countries examined make the necessary efforts to keep global warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees.
Two Scandinavian countries, Denmark and Sweden, are in fourth and fifth place, followed by Chile and Morocco.

Switzerland’s poor performance causes great disappointment in environmental protection organisations: “Switzerland needs to wake up from the deep slumber of politics after yet another poor ranking. A comparison of climate protection countries shows that the efforts made so far are not enough and we are at the bottom of the league when it comes to climate issues makes it clear,” says Georg Klingler, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace Switzerland.
There is much to do for Switzerland: “To catch up, the federal government needs to stop glossing over climate efforts with CO₂ offsets and accounting gimmicks. “Switzerland needs to reduce its domestic emissions by at least 60 percent by 2030, instead of the 34 percent currently planned,” Klingler said.
Switzerland also needs to be more committed to climate protection abroad. Without these efforts, it will be difficult to break into the top 20 in climate protection; other countries are apparently moving much faster.
