Pizza, pizza and even more: the Italian specialty is by far the most popular dish in Switzerland, at least when it comes to food orders. This emerges from an annual data evaluation by Just Eat, the industry leader among delivery services in Switzerland. Pizza Margherita, Pizza Prosciutto and even the controversial Pizza Hawaii top the list of most frequently ordered items.
Pizza Canton Schwyz
When looking at the cantons one by one, interesting differences can be seen. Swiss classics are among the three most popular dishes in just two cantons. In Appenzell Innerrhoden, spaetzli with apple sauce and cheese is in second place, while only burgers are more popular among the people of Innerrhoden. In Obwalden, the Swiss classic Poulet im Körbli came in third place, but had to admit defeat against two international dishes: döner kebab in first place and pizza in second place.
In most cantons, pizza ranks first in two of the top three places, with different variations. All three medal-winning places in the canton of Schwyz go to pizza: Margherita, Prosciutto and Wunschpizza are on the podium.
The people of Schaffhausen’s taste in pizza seem to be particularly controversial. Pizza Kebab is in first place, and Pizza Hawaii is in third place.
Exotic tastes in Jura
However, there are also cantons that despise pizza. For them, the ranking is even more exotic: In the canton of Jura, for example, tacos, gyozas and sushi dominate. The biggest burger lovers are the people of Geneva. They prefer to order the cheeseburger first and then the chicken burger.
Although pizza, burgers and kebabs predominate, orders for Swiss cuisine increased by 72 percent in all cantons. This increase was even higher for Indian food alone (+77 percent). Japanese (+55 percent) and Vietnamese (+46 percent) are also enjoying increased popularity.
Also noteworthy: Vegetarian and vegan cuisine is still on the rise. Just Eat writes that corresponding orders increased by 12 percent compared to the previous year.
