Sales at Swiss retailers in October 2023 increased by a nominal 1.1 percent compared to the previous year, according to provisional results published by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Thursday. Development is adjusted for sales and holiday effects.

In real terms – that is, when factors such as inflation are taken into account – sales fell slightly by 0.1 percent year-on-year.

In the monthly comparison, retail sales of food, beverages and tobacco products fell by 0.6 percent (actual -0.2 percent). The non-food sector recorded a nominal increase of 1.0 percent (real -0.1 percent).

Retail sales statistics from the Federal Statistical Office are based on a random sample of approximately 3,000 companies. This is a monthly survey in which small companies are asked about their monthly sales figures on a quarterly basis.
