Einsiedeln Hospital has a history of almost 700 years. It was founded in 1353 as a pilgrimage hospital and burned down in the 16th century. It was later rebuilt and served as a children’s home and poorhouse for centuries, but burned down again in the 1970s. In 1984, Pope John II. John Paul II (1920–2005) visited the hospital as part of his pilgrimage. The recent history of the hospital is also full of events.

The Maria zum Finstern Wald Hospital Foundation has accumulated debts of 65 million francs over the decades due to loss-making hospital operations. The foundation has freed up hospital operations since Ameos joined, but the mountain of debt remains. As part of the restructuring package, the foundation will receive a one-time contribution of 6.5 million francs and a loan of 4 million francs from the Einsiedeln region. Financial institutions are giving the foundation an additional $10 million in loans guaranteed by the district. In return, the district will be relieved of its deficit guarantee for the hospital.
