The air is getting colder, wetter and darker; Flu season is right around the corner. Switzerland sneezes, coughs and sniffles in ways that will make you shiver. Just don’t get infected, don’t miss work and don’t banish the whole family to bed! So dress warmly and eat plenty of fruit.

You can prevent or at least weaken the flu by getting vaccinated. Every child knows this. And especially risk groups. The only problem is that the majority of Swiss people ignore the flu vaccine recommendation.

A study by the University Hospital Zurich in collaboration with Groupe Mutuel found that only 19 percent of high-risk patients in Switzerland were vaccinated against flu, according to a press release.

The result of the corona vaccine?

One thing is clear: the Federal Office of Public Health recommends, among other things, that people over the age of 65 be vaccinated against seasonal flu. There are also patients with chronic diseases.

The latest research on the flu vaccine shows that the vaccination rate of 19 percent is shockingly low compared to previous years. The result of all the debates about the meaning and absurdity of the corona vaccine? Researchers cannot answer this question definitively.

Self-payers are reluctant

Other findings are much more exciting. 40 percent of nursing home residents are vaccinated. According to the research, frequent doctor visits and the presence of chronic lung disease are also among the factors that increase the likelihood of getting a flu vaccine. However, patients with high discount rates are less likely to receive the vaccine. Therefore, when it comes to money, people are more shy.

Flu causes up to 330,000 doctor visits and up to 5,000 hospitalizations each year in Switzerland. Effective last words of the study authors: “These days, everyone in the risk group should definitely consider vaccination!”
