In an unusual step, encrypted chat service Signal has made its costs public. About $50 million a year will be needed by 2025, a blog post published Thursday said. (archive image)

It currently costs $19 million in salaries and other personnel expenses for about 50 full-time employees. The bandwidth required for data transmission alone costs $2.8 million annually.

Signal constantly relies on end-to-end encryption, where the communication content is only visible to those involved in plaintext. Therefore, messages are temporarily stored on the company’s servers for transmission purposes only. This costs $1.3 million annually.

Signal’s encryption technology is also used by chat service WhatsApp, among others. Signal is non-profit and managed by a foundation. The service wants to fund itself over the long term with the help of a broad donor base, the foundation’s president, Meredith Whittaker, wrote in a blog post. So far, Signal has been helped by a million-dollar donation from WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton. He received some of the more than $20 billion that Facebook paid for WhatsApp and later co-founded the Signal Foundation.
