Tens of thousands of people, including Swedish activist Greta Thunberg (20), attended the climate march in Amsterdam on Sunday, shortly before the parliamentary elections in the Netherlands. This was the largest such demonstration in the history of the Dutch capital. Participants, mostly young people, held posters such as “Our house is on fire” and “In 2015: ‘Dad, what are trees?’”

According to organizers, nearly 70,000 people attended the demonstration for greater climate protection, more than ever before. The march was organized by climate and environmental groups including Extinction Rebellion, Fridays for Future, Oxfam and Greenpeace. In the joint statement, the importance of the parliamentary elections to be held on November 22 was touched upon. These are “the most important that ever existed” in terms of climate protection.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s (56) right-wing liberal party and the newly formed NSC party of anti-corruption campaigner Pieter Omtzigt (49) are now neck-and-neck in polls for the election. In third place is the electoral alliance formed by the Greens and Social Democrats. (AFP)
