In May, he took the top job at Migros, Switzerland’s largest private employer: Mario Irminger (58), Denner’s longtime boss. Since then, the most comprehensive renovation in the history of the Dutti universe has been ongoing. Focus: Specialty stores of Supermarket AG and Migros Group. “We need to reposition ourselves here to meet the current challenges,” says Mario Irminger in an interview with Blick.

Migros, which is managed regionally, wants to make its main business more profitable by centralizing it in supermarkets. The highlight is the new supermarket AG. There needs to be smaller stores and the store network in certain regions needs to be renewed. “We are also standardizing the range of services and products for our customers throughout Switzerland,” continues Irminger. But there shouldn’t be a one-size-fits-all approach for customers. Ten regional cooperatives should continue to sell typical local products. “Greater efficiency also means we can offer good prices to our customers,” adds Irminger.

Solutions needed for faltering specialist markets

When it comes to specialty shops, Irminger puts companies like Melectronics to the test, as Blick explained in his interview. Migros’ boss is also closely examining other specialist formats. “We have to find sensible solutions to them because they are effectively a problem for us today.”

Irminger needs the approval of the house of delegates before he can shake things up with a big scoop. On November 11, a vote will be held to reduce the size of MGB management and establish Supermarket AG. In order for both agenda items to turn into a formality, Irminger is giving up voting, as he stated in his interview.

There’s important Christmas work coming up for Irminger in the next few weeks. In order to ensure correct sales, he makes the following promise to customers: “We take the decreasing purchasing power into account and create and expand our product range to ensure that every segment of society can buy products from Migros in their own price range.”
