Since October, Christmas decorations have returned to stores, and with them the first thoughts about holiday planning for next year. Since in many companies not everyone can go on holiday at the same time, many people are already in the beginning stages of starting their holidays: the important thing is to secure the most desired bridge days. And there will be a few of them next year. Because in 2024, no public holiday will fall on a weekend.

Return of the year 2023/2024

Last year, Christmas and New Year’s Eve fell on a weekend. This year is better: December 24th falls on a Sunday when most people are still working, while public holidays are on the 25th/26th. December Mondays and Tuesdays. January 1 (national public holiday) falls on Monday, January 2; In the cantons of Aargau, Bern, Jura, Neuchâtel, Schaffhausen, Thurgau, Vaud and Zurich, the public holiday falls on Tuesday.

Anyone who takes three days of leave from December 26 to December 29 will have 11 days off, including January 10 or 2. You can also take 6 to 7 vacation days entered January 2-5 – or January 3 – 5, depending on where you live – for a total of 16 days off.

Easter

Of course, Easter falls on a weekend. In 2024, Easter falls from March 29 (Good Friday) to April 1 (Easter Monday). Take 4 days off before or after, but you are entitled to 10 days off. Great for Glarus residents: thanks to the “Näfelserfahrt” (4 April) they only have to sacrifice 3 days for a 10-day holiday.

May holidays

In some cantons, Labor Day, when no one works, will fall on a Wednesday in 2024. For a 2-day holiday entry, a five-day break is possible, provided that you live in a canton where 1 May is a public holiday. Ascension falls on May 9 (Thursday) and Whit Monday falls on May 20.

Who is 2nd/3rd. If you take leave on May 6-8 and May 10, you can still take 12 days of leave for every 6 working days you take. Pentecost is as usual: you can take 9 days off in a row with 4 days off.

In the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Jura, Lucerne, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Schwyz, Ticino, Uri, Valais and Zug (and individual communities from other cantons) May 31 is also a popular bridge day because Corpus Christi falls on May 30. And so it is possible to have 4 consecutive days of vacation with 1 day off.

national holiday

It falls on Thursday, August 1st. Take Friday, August 2, off and you’ll have a four-day weekend.

all saints day

It falls on Friday, November 1st. So, we have a long weekend ahead for the cantons where All Saints’ Day is a public holiday: Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus, Jura, Lucerne, Obwalden, Nidwalden, St. Gallen, Schwyz, Ticino, Uri, Valais and Zug (plus individual communities in other cantons). Perhaps some people from other cantons may want to take November 1st off so that they can accompany the child to Halloween in the evening (October 31st) and then have a few days off.

Return of the year 2024/2025

Things are going to be very exciting in 2025. December 24th falls on a Tuesday, and public holidays (Christmas Day, St. Stephen’s Day) fall on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The following week, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day fall on Tuesday and Wednesday. Berchtold Day (January 2) is on Thursday. For six working days off (23/24 December, 27 December, 30/31 December and 3 January) there is a whopping 16 days of holiday. Some people only get a half-day deduction on December 24th and 31st. Even if Berchtold Day is not a public holiday in the canton where you live, these bridge days are worth it.
