US states sue Meta: Facebook and Instagram are harming children

According to the lawsuit filed Tuesday in California, Meta is ignoring the negative consequences of Facebook and Instagram to make more profits.

The Facebook Group said it was disappointing that state attorneys general were taking legal action instead of working on industry-wide standards for apps used by teens. The company has disputed that since the beginning of the investigation it has been shown to show how Meta is working to support young users on its platforms. Negotiations for a settlement before the lawsuit failed, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Business model that aims to keep users on the platform longer

The states accuse Meta, among other accusations, of the fact that the platforms’ business model is aimed at getting children and teenagers to spend more time on the platform. Meta was aware that it was easier to attract younger users: States, among other things, condemned “Like” functions and notifications that repeatedly pulled them to the screens. However, Meta falsely claims that children and teenagers are not manipulated.

According to the complaint, which is more than 200 pages long, use of the platforms disrupts learning behavior and sleep, and the services promote problems such as eating disorders. The plaintiff also claims that Meta knew that the functions of the online platforms were harmful and addictive. The allegations are based on statements made by whistleblower Frances Haugen in 2021.

Insufficient age verification

Other allegations include that Meta allows users under the age of 13 to access services without explicit parental consent. This is prohibited by law in the US; but efforts to implement actual age verification have always failed in the Supreme Court. That is why online services ask whether the user has reached the age of 13 during registration.

At the same time, procedures were developed to identify young users in the sector. This includes, for example, analysis of writing behavior. In response to the lawsuit, Meta also referenced its own age verification technologies. The company also cited a survey showing that other online services like TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat are just as popular. Psychologists also believe that online media can play a positive role in the development of young people.
