The focus has been on US bond market yields in particular, as yields on trend-setting ten-year bonds temporarily rose above five percent for the first time since 2007. When it came back a bit, US stock markets, which initially started out generally weak, stabilized.

At the same time, concerns continue to exist in the market that the Gaza war will escalate. Additionally, heading into the close of trading, the focus was already on major US technology companies that were due to file their quarterly reports later in the week.

The Dow Jones Industrial extended its 1.6 percent loss from last week and fell another 0.58 percent to 32,936.41 points. Thus, it closed at its lowest level since May. The market-wide S&P 500 index decreased by 0.17 percent to 4217.04 points. Nasdaq 100 index, which consists mainly of technology stocks, increased by 0.30 percent to 14,604.85 points.
