Disney+ does this like Netflix: Starting November 1, the Swiss streaming service will now offer three subscription options instead of a single subscription as before. Disney wants to give customers “the opportunity to choose the subscription that best suits their needs,” Disney said in a statement. However, upon closer examination, it becomes clear that there is a serious price increase behind this.

Because services with the previous price model of 12.90 francs per month or 129 francs per year will be discounted: Simultaneous playback will now be possible on only two devices instead of four. And in the future, “standard” users will have to settle for Full HD instead of 4K resolution.

That’s not all: Existing customers who do not actively defend themselves will automatically switch to the “Premium” subscription from December 6 and will pay five francs more per month for the same services as before! The annual subscription increases accordingly from 50 to 179 francs. So far, Swiss users have not been proactively notified about the change. It’s unclear when this will happen.

Now also has a subscription with ads

Alongside the narrowed-down “Standard” and higher-priced “Premium” subscriptions, there is now also a model with advertising for 7.90 francs per month. The ad subscription has been available in the US since the end of last year and has been a huge success there, as Disney announced over the summer. At that time, the company also announced its launch in Europe for the first time. Now the group has confirmed this definitively in this country as well. The new subscriptions will be implemented simultaneously in Germany, Italy, France, Spain, England, Norway, Sweden and Denmark.

Disney may also follow Netflix on a second point: The company is actively working to prevent account sharing between different households. The measure is planned to be implemented in Canada from November. Disney has not yet provided specific data for other countries. So far, rival Netflix was the only paid streaming service to have established such an account lock. It has been in force in Switzerland since July this year.

According to a survey by market research institute Ipsos, Disney+, with its 950,000 users, ranks second in Switzerland behind Netflix, with nearly 2.4 million subscriptions. But the gap is shrinking: Eight percent more Swiss said they used the Disney service compared to the previous year. Close behind is another American provider, Amazon Prime Video (750,000 users).
