A knife-wielding attacker killed a teacher at a school in Arras, northern France. Another teacher and a superintendent were seriously injured in Friday’s attack, according to police. No students were injured. The perpetrator shouted, “Allah is great.”

Police sources said that the person was said to be 20 years old and from Chechnya. He was registered on the national list of dangerous criminals. According to the local newspaper “La Voix du Nord”, this person is a former student of the school.

According to police, both the perpetrator and his 17-year-old brother were arrested. The Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office is conducting an investigation into terrorism-related murder and attempted murder.

Elysée announced that French President Emmanuel Macron wants to go to Arras in the afternoon. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and Education Minister Gabriel Attal are also expected to be in Arras. Attal called for strengthening school security.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne canceled her visit to Orléans and returned to Paris. The French National Assembly suspended its session due to a knife attack.

In the afternoon, students and faculty were still in the school building, which was closed off by police.

“He attacked the staff in the canteen. “I wanted to intervene, but he turned his back on me and wanted to know if I was a history and geography teacher,” said Martin Dousseau, a philosophy teacher. “We barricaded ourselves, then the police came,” he said.

In videos shared online, a young man with a gun is seen fighting with other adults in the schoolyard. Police appealed to the public not to distribute images of the crime out of respect for the relatives.

The background of the crime was initially unclear. In France, memories are coming back to haunt the murder of teacher Samuel Paty, the victim of a jihadist-motivated attack almost three years ago on October 16, 2020. The perpetrator also had Chechen roots.
