Stadler has reached an agreement with the state of California to purchase hydrogen-powered trains.

Stadler has received another order for hydrogen trains. An agreement has been reached with the state of California for the purchase of hydrogen-powered trains, the company led by Peter Spuhler (64) announced on Friday.

Stadler will build at least four trains for the California State Transportation Agency (CalSTA) and Caltrans. There is also the option to sell up to 25 trains in total.

Hydrogen trains were tested in Switzerland

“The partnership between Stadler and the San Bernardino County Transportation Authority (SBCTA) made possible the development of the first hydrogen-powered train in North America,” Stadler said in the press release. The trains were tested in both Switzerland and the USA.

Since almost no rail lines in the United States are electrified, hydrogen solutions are even more important to reduce emissions from rail operations. Stadler has not yet announced when trains might start operating in California.

In July, Stadler announced it would sell 25 hydrogen trains to Italy. (lui)
