You still have enough time to change your health insurance now. Some of those with basic insurance are considering applying for a new health insurance fund next year, following the announced 8.7 percent premium increase.
Important criterion: How does the health insurance use my money? According to the list prepared by the Moneyland comparison service, there are large differences in basic insurance administration costs per person. These costs include personnel costs, commissions and advertising costs. In total, insurers spent 1.7 billion francs on basic insurance management last year.
Highest management costs
At 458 francs per person, the Birchmeier health insurance company spends by far the most money on administration. This is followed by Supra with 276 francs per person and Vivao Sympany with 270 francs. “For smaller insurers, fluctuations can be larger,” says health economist Andreas Kohler (42) from the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW). “If the insured makes fewer claims for benefits and therefore tends to stay insured within a year, “You may be lucky. Lower benefits result in administrative costs.” On the contrary, things may get worse next year.
“Investments or depreciation in IT have a greater impact on smaller ones,” says Monika Merki Frey (71) from healthcare consultancy Merkihealth. Among the major health insurers, Mutuel Assurance Maladie performed the worst, with 262 francs per insured person.
These funds spend the least
Last year the Lucerne Hinterland health insurance company spent 105 francs per person on administration. Sumiswalder health insurance company is in second place, while Sodalis is in third place with 114 francs per insured. What is noteworthy is that six of the 10 largest health insurance companies are represented among the top 16 health insurance companies. CSS spends the least money per capita at 157 francs. This is followed by Visana (161 francs) and Helsana (171 francs). “Larger health insurance companies can invest in automating billing and thus achieve efficiency gains,” says expert Kohler.
How expensive the bonus is compared to administrative costs
For every 100 francs of premium we pay, approximately 5 francs goes to the basic insurance administration. This rate has not changed much over the years. “The current premium development is not due to administrative costs,” two experts unanimously said. Among major insurance companies, Visana has the best ratio between health insurance premium and administrative costs at 3.6 percent. Assura has the worst performance among the majors with 7.2 percent.
savings potential
But there are ways to save costs. “There is further savings potential in invoice processing thanks to digitalization,” Kohler tells Blick. At larger insurance companies, invoices are already sent automatically, checked and processed by humans if necessary. This system can be further improved thanks to technological developments.
