US President Joe Biden’s (80) son filed a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump’s (77) former personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, regarding the public disclosure of data on his laptop. In a civil lawsuit filed Tuesday in a federal court in California, Hunter Biden, 53, accuses the former New York mayor of “completely destroying” his “digital privacy.”
The lawsuit states that Giuliani and his former attorney, Robert Costello, spent “an incredible amount of time and energy” “searching for, hacking, defacing, altering, copying and distributing data stolen from Biden’s devices.” It was almost an obsession.
Hunter Biden accuses Giuliani and Costello of violating the computer fraud law, among other things. The 53-year-old man is seeking an undisclosed amount of damages.
Already caused turmoil
The laptop and the documents inside have made headlines many times in recent years. This happened for the first time in the final push of the 2020 presidential election campaign between incumbent Trump and his rival Biden. The New York Post reported at the time that Giuliani had obtained data from the laptop a few weeks before the election.
Accordingly, the emails found on him should show that Biden used his father’s position in Ukraine, who was then the US Vice President and was responsible for his country’s Ukraine policy, for business in 2015. Trump had spoken of the “laptop from hell” in his television duel with Biden before the election.
Transferred copies
The origin of the story dates back to April 2019: Hunter Biden is said to have dropped off his laptop at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, but then never picked it up again. The store’s owner, Trump supporter John Paul Mac Isaac, said he then made copies of the data stored on the device and forwarded them to Giuliani’s then-lawyer Costello.
Since then, Hunter Biden’s emails, documents and private photos said to have come from the laptop have been made public multiple times. Last March, the president’s son sued the owner of the computer store as part of a legal counterattack.
Impeachment investigation launched against Biden
Opposition Republicans have been attacking Hunter Biden for years and trying to harm his father politically. Republicans in the House of Representatives recently launched an impeachment inquiry against the president. The first impeachment hearing will be held on Thursday. Republicans accuse Joe Biden of meddling in his son’s controversial foreign transactions. There is no evidence of this yet.
Regardless, Hunter Biden has trouble with the US justice system: He was charged with illegal gun possession in mid-September. Investigations are continuing against him on suspicion of tax evasion. (AFP/ene)
