Where is the passport? Where’s the boarding pass? Travelers often experience stress at airports and are always worried about not having important documents at hand or even losing them. This will be history at Singapore’s Changi Airport from 2024: travelers should be able to enter the airport without a passport. The boarding pass also becomes unnecessary.
The airport wants to introduce an automated immigration control system that works solely with biometric data. “CNN” reported that a “single authentication token” aims to revolutionize the process. Once the biometric data is recorded, passengers do not need to present their passports and boarding passes at various checkpoints.
Physical documents become unnecessary
Communications Minister Josephine Teo announced the move during a parliamentary session where several amendments to the country’s immigration law were passed.
The “token” will be used at various automated contact points, from baggage drop to immigration control and boarding. Therefore, there is no need for physical documents. The minister did not explain how long passenger data would be stored.
Singapore’s Changi Airport has been named the world’s best airport several times. It is a hub in Asia and served more than 5 million passengers in June alone, and the number is growing.
Minister Teo said: “Our immigration systems must be able to manage this high and increasing passenger volume efficiently, providing a positive transaction experience while ensuring our safety.” (what is that)
