One of the questions was: “Do you jump into bed with your cold partner?” Two-thirds of Swiss surveyed say: Yes! This share is 7 points above the European average. This emerges from the “Health Report 2023”, prepared annually in Europe on behalf of the pharmaceutical company Stada.
The result regarding the sexual behavior of the Swiss is surprising, because we Swiss are known to be more risk averse. When it comes to closeness, we let down our guard against bacteria and germs. But we are critical: Swiss respondents rate their own health less well than in the rest of Europe, but they pay more attention to it in comparison.
Too much exercise, poor sleep
63 percent of Swiss respondents said that since Corona they have done more for their physical health than before, for example increased consumption of vitamin supplements or stable healthcare expenses. However, people in Switzerland sleep less than in the rest of Europe: 42 percent said they slept poorly, or even very poorly; In the rest of Europe, this rate is 34 percent.
The bottom line: 77 percent of respondents in Switzerland are satisfied with the local healthcare system, despite rising health insurance premiums. In the rest of Europe, the figure is 61 percent. But we are becoming less digital: In Switzerland, only 24 percent of respondents said they could make an appointment with their doctor online; In the rest of Europe, 43 percent of respondents already have or are using this option. And almost three-quarters of Swiss people buy painkillers at the local pharmacy – abroad drugs are much more often purchased online.
Common illness headaches
The things we fear most are cancer (40 percent), heart attack (18 percent) or stroke (16 percent). However, only 55 percent of respondents in this country are open to genetic testing for early detection; In Europe, this willingness is much higher at 67 percent.
The Swiss also use medication relatively frequently. One in ten Swiss people take painkillers every day (rest of Europe: 7 percent). The most common headache (59 percent), followed by toothache (32 percent) and back pain (30 percent). This order also applies to the rest of Europe. However, the Swiss are very concerned about the security of their drug supply. 16 percent have experienced or know someone who has experienced care-related problems.
Interesting: Compared to the rest of Europe, people in Switzerland rate their mental health better. As the main insurance company CSS in Lucerne states in its annual health survey, one in three people struggle with psychological problems.
Major cantonal differences
The analysis of the results according to the Swiss regions held by Blick is also interesting. People in northwestern Switzerland are more likely to avoid intimacy when they catch a cold than in the rest of Switzerland. This may be because people in northwestern Switzerland catch colds (and toothaches!) much more often than other Swiss people.
The Central Swiss are the group with the least muscle problems. On the other hand, rejection of genetic tests is highest because they do not believe they are valid.
Eastern Swiss people are characterized by the highest rates of fatigue and obesity as a result of lack of sleep. Zurich residents are clearly more susceptible to diseases than before the pandemic. The Swiss are least affected by headaches or backaches, but are “most susceptible to weather conditions”. They also clearly take the most painkillers.
But the people of Ticino show the largest deviation from standard values. Clearly those who are most concerned about security of supply are those who have increased their healthcare spending the most and who perceive themselves to be much healthier than the rest of Switzerland.
