Smoked trout lovers need to be brave these days. On Thursday, Coop, Migros and Denner removed 17 varieties from their product range. Reason for recall: Listeria! It’s not funny. If a person eats food contaminated with Listeria, they may develop the infectious disease Listeriosis. Bad bacteria are especially common in meat, fish and dairy products.
These things are very durable. However, if the products are well cooked at at least 70 degrees, they will die. This is so stupid: This is generally not the case with smoked fish. In healthy people, the infection is usually completely harmless. But the elderly and pregnant women are particularly at risk. You run the risk of flu-like symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain, and blood poisoning. Even stillbirths have been documented.
Fish factory in Vejle
Blick’s research showed that the Listeria trout all came from the same fish factory in Vejle, Denmark. Agustsons is the name of the traditional family business of the town with a population of 61,000. The company has been operating since 1933 and currently supplies half of Europe, primarily smoked trout, but also a variety of fish and seafood.
Denner buys the trout for sale from Agustsons. However, there is generally no information regarding agreements made with suppliers. Coop also buys from the Danes, a spokesman said. «We rely on long-term partnerships. “We will talk to the supplier and analyze this situation together later,” he promises.
Migros has not yet responded to Blick’s request. The Agustsons also did not want to answer any questions.
The latest Listeria scandal doesn’t just affect Switzerland. Lidl Germany has recalled smoked trout. Just like Kaufland Germany.
