Until now, Tiktok was seen as a platform for shallow short video content. Now, the entertainment giant is entering the battle for dominance of text messaging services with the introduction of text-only posts.

The video-sharing platform announced Monday that its users can now create “text-based content.” They also want to create space for “written creativity”. Users can stress for a maximum of 1000 words per post.

bunch of threads

The timing is certainly no accident. Many people are looking for an alternative to Twitter, recently X. Megacorp Meta first tried the Threads platform. It was met with great interest and registered more than 150 million downloads just days after its launch. But interest in the Twitter copy quickly waned. Data from Sensor Tower revealed that the number of daily active users on Threads has dropped 70 percent since it peaked on July 7. The platform has only 13 million active users. Usage time in minutes per user has also decreased significantly.

Meanwhile, Twitter is making headlines with its legally incomplete renaming of the “X”. To that end, X should no longer be just a text messaging service, but an “everything app” based on the Chinese WeChat model. Users should get many important functions from a single source. But there is still a long way to go.

In this way, the owner of X, Elon Musk (53) risks losing more users. His announcement that unverified Twitter accounts would only be allowed to send a limited number of messages per day in the future was met with heavy criticism.

Tiktok as a smiling third party?

The weakness of threads and Twitter’s refocus on X (Blick reported this in April) may not create a vacuum – but the opportunity to cut a piece of the pie is definitely there.

Tiktok currently has over a billion users worldwide. That’s less than two billion Instagram threads could theoretically benefit from. Tiktok users no longer have to switch to Twitter or its alternatives for text messages. However, Tiktok is also criticized for its Chinese owners and is closely followed in various countries.
