At the Lac des Brenets in Neuchâtel Jura, shipping will be suspended from Saturday due to the ongoing drought. There is no more water in the port anyway.
Lindsay Rivoire of shipping company in Lac des Brenets confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency on Friday a related report from radio and television RTS in western Switzerland. She said when shipping can resume depends on the weather.
“The level of Doubs drops an average of 18 centimeters per day when it is not raining. It has been sinking continuously since June and there is currently no water in front of the port,” he said.
Drought has been a problem for years
The shipping company hopes it rains. “If it rains well, the shipping could resume in two days,” Rivoire continued.
The approximately 26-metre-deep Lac des Brenets, a natural reservoir of the Doubs, has repeatedly dried up partially or completely in recent years. In 2022, shipping was suspended from mid-July to early September. Operations were suspended in September 2018. (SDA)
