According to the Federal Department of Transportation, installing solar panels between tracks no longer guarantees adequate control of the tracks. (icon image)

According to media reports, Baptiste Danichert, co-founder of Sun-Ways, said, “The decision was made based on a preliminary technical report and technical changes are underway to apply for a new permit.” “The project at Buttes has not been abandoned,” he confirmed.

BAV states that its reservations are primarily of a safety-related nature. “The installation of solar panels between/on the tracks no longer guarantees adequate control of the tracks,” said BAV spokesperson Florence Pictet. With this system, the maintenance of the rails will cause serious additional costs.

BAV also points out that a passing train threw objects, causing dirt that could damage solar modules. “As there are already very few windows for maintenance work on the railways, this could further disrupt train services and cause delays,” Pictet added.

BAV made its decision on the basis of the preliminary technical report sent to it by Sun-Ways’ partner Neuchâtel shipping company. Project owners can still formally submit a plan approval dossier.

The project in Buttes was presented as a world first in January and had a budget of CHF 400,000. The plan is to install solar panels on a section of about 100 meters near the Val-de-Travers train station.

The spaces between the rails will be used to connect the removable photovoltaic systems. The company has patented a hanging system that allows the solar modules to be installed and removed quickly.
