Home gardeners looking to purchase Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer are having a hard time. Major construction and garden centers, from Jumbo to Migros Do it + Garden, to the Bauhaus and the Hauenstein garden center, to Obi and Hornbach, sell only herbicides without the highly controversial active ingredient glyphosate. Only Landi, a chain of stores owned by the Swiss agricultural cooperative Fenaco, still offers the glyphosate herbicide.
Glyphosate is suspected to be carcinogenic. To date, 154,000 such lawsuits have been filed in the US against Monsanto and its parent company Bayer. 109,000 people have been settled or not brought to court, with the remaining approximately 45,000 pending.
3.8 billion euros provision
Under great pressure, Bayer is only selling Roundup to private individuals in the US without questionable content, but “for security reasons, not to minimize legal risks,” according to its website. Bayer provided 3.8 billion euros for justifiable claims.
In Switzerland, Roundup is still approved for private individuals. But with partial ban: It cannot be used on streets, pathways and squares. Landi writes on request that Roundup is “a ready-to-use product with a low concentration of glyphosate to protect the user and the environment.” They also offer organic produce, beneficial insects and a wide variety of coating materials, plant boosters and microorganisms as alternatives to chemical pesticides.
“Through competent advice in the shop or through the extensive information in Landi.ch, we support customers in choosing the most suitable crop protection product,” Landi continues. Roundup is recommended on its website as “ideal for the home garden,” and people seem in vain to refer to the ban. It can be found in the bottle of Roundup, but in lower case and only when you peel off the label on the back.
