Climate change is bringing another ski area to its knees. Not in winter because there is no snow. But already in the summer. It is a time when you have to make strategic decisions. The Sattel-Hochstuckli SZ ski area encountered one of them. And it has it all.
Two major chairlifts in Hochstuckli will be closed in the future. Starting next season, only beginners will be in the valley. “In the future, winter’s focus will be on winter sports beginners and experiences in the snow. And unprofitable offers,” says Martin Ulrich, Chairman of the Board of Sattel-Hochstuckli AG. There are economic, social and climatic reasons for the repositioning.
“No one buys a season ticket like this”
The Governing Body recognizes that this reposition and the consequent abandonment of the two cable cars in Hochstuckli is painful and represents a farewell to a beloved tradition. “But the previous winter operation can no longer be justified economically. It jeopardizes the continued existence of the company as a whole,” he says. These are plain words.
The decision causes a lot of turbulence on the mountain. For example with Ulrich Marty. He served as a Board Member and Board Delegate for 27 years. And he still owns a holiday home in the area. Accordingly, the decision hurts him. He told Blick, “If we only have one training lift, no one buys season tickets anymore!” says. “The whole society is suffering” Request: “You should definitely reverse the decision!”
“Just turn the knob”
It’s about millions. Before the next winter one will soon go bankrupt. “We have everything you need here,” says Marty. About artificial snow at an altitude of 800 to 1600 meters above sea level. “At the beginning of winter, we just need to flip the switch. And we can start again.”
Resistance occurred on Thursday evening. 50 interested people came together to form an interest group. At the general assembly to be held on August 2, they want to overthrow the board of directors of the railways. And so they ensure the continuation of their existence.
However, that has long been under a bad star: skiing last winter, for example, was unthinkable. There was no snow. Additionally, on important Christmas days, the weather was too hot for snowballs to do anything about it. Instead, the summer toboggan run was opened. Season ticket holders can sled for free. A little consolation for ski lovers.
