The Swiss Cable Car Association (SBS) announced on Thursday that the number of guests in May and June increased by 16 percent compared to the previous year, based on its survey of 60 members across the country. Sales increased 19 percent. A great start to this summer.
“Hiking and outdoor activities are becoming more and more popular in Switzerland, and this allows Swiss mountain railways to attract more and more guests thanks to the adapted offer even in the warm season,” said Berno Stoffel, director of the association. .
The strongest growth was in Central Switzerland. There, the number of guests increased by a quarter, while sales increased by 63 percent. In Valais, the number of passengers increased by 20 percent and sales by 27 percent. In the Bernese Oberland, too, the cable cars enjoyed nearly a quarter more passengers, while sales were below average, up 12 percent.
Higher numbers were also noted in the Vaud and Friborg Alps. This increase, which is particularly interesting, also affects regions that were predominantly winter tourism in the past.
By contrast, guest numbers fell slightly in Eastern Switzerland and Ticino, and sales in Ticino fell 14 percent. Passenger numbers in Graubünden fell by 10 percent.
“Looking at the 5-year average is even more pleasing for the Swiss ropeway industry. Compared to the data of the last five years, the number of guests on the cable cars has increased by more than a third throughout Switzerland.”
All analyzed regions recorded a significant increase here. The increase was greatest in the Vaud and Friborg Alps (+67%) and Valais (+55%).
Swiss mountain railways would increasingly focus on operation throughout the year. The association’s director, Stoffel, explained, therefore, that they are on the right track.
