Serious bus accident in Mexico: A bus crashed downhill in a mountainous region of the southern state of Oaxaca. 29 people died. According to prosecutor Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla, 17 more were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
Six of the injured were unconscious and in a life-threatening condition at the time of their hospitalization, according to the competent civil protection authority. According to the civil protection official, the bus fell from a height of 20 meters.
Photos show the completely destroyed bus
According to police and prosecutors, a local transport company’s bus had left Mexico City and arrived in Santiago de Yosondúa, further south. The accident occurred in the mountain town of Peñasco, Magdalena.
Photos taken from the scene of the accident show the bus that had crashed lying on its side at the foot of a steep cliff. It was not clear at first why the vehicle went off the road and fell into the valley. According to Prosecutor Alamilla, the cause of the accident is under investigation. There are the first signs of technical malfunction.
Traffic accidents are not uncommon in Mexico
“Our government workers are on the ground, participating in rescue efforts and supporting the injured,” Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara said online. He offered his condolences to the families of the deceased.
With its beaches, mountains, pastel-coloured buildings of the capital of the same name, and the Monte Alban archaeological site, the Oaxaca region is very popular with tourists.
Fatal traffic accidents are common in Mexico, mostly due to high speeds, poor vehicle conditions or driver fatigue. Many people depend on buses operated by small transport companies, some of which serve remote communities with outdated vehicles. (AFP/dzc)
