Swiss employers are desperately looking for skilled workers. At the same time, the Swiss job market remained highly stable. In the second quarter of this year, there are 5 percent more vacancies compared to the same period last year. This is the conclusion of the Adecco Group Swiss Job Market Index, the job market monitor of the University of Zurich.
Overall, 8 out of 14 job groups have more open positions than a year ago. Particularly in demand are: Construction and expansion (+20 percent), assembly and unskilled workers (+15 percent), and trade and industry (+14 percent) specialists. The shortage of skilled workers in the construction industry seems to be getting worse: Most companies in the industry complain of a lack of suitable staff. However, the demand for skilled workers may decline in the near and medium future, especially among artisans.
On the other hand, there has been a surprising reversal in the field of university careers in computer science. There are 20 percent fewer open positions in IT. There is less demand for software and application developers and analysts in particular. “The recent past has been characterized by hiring freezes and layoffs in IT companies. These factors undoubtedly also have an impact on the number of jobs available for IT professionals in Switzerland,” says Yanik Kipfer of Job Market Monitor Switzerland.
Fewer managers wanted
There are less advertised positions in university occupations such as marketing specialists (-7 percent) and CV, management and business specialists (-7 percent). Managers and sales managers are also 10 percent less in demand.
The job market in Latin-speaking Switzerland has changed significantly more than in German-speaking Switzerland (+4%), with an increase of 11 percent. At the end of 2022, the job market reached a “historic high”.
