Brazil’s supreme election court won the majority needed to ban former President Jair Bolsonaro, 68, from all political office for eight years. As learned on Friday, four out of seven judges voted to convict the right-wing ex-president for misconduct, with one voting against.
However, the votes of the two judges were still pending. They may request a postponement of the final decision to further examine the case.
Second round, lost to Lula
The prosecutor accuses Bolsonaro, among other things, of abusing his political power, which the 68-year-old denies. During the election campaign before the 2022 presidential election, the then-president made false allegations about serious security flaws in Brazil’s electronic voting system. He then narrowly lost in the second round to his left-wing opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
If convicted at trial, Bolsonaro will not be able to run again in the next presidential election in Brazil in 2026, as planned. (AFP)
