Many Swiss households now have to pay less for gas. However, raw materials for heating are still much more expensive today than before the Ukrainian war. However, further price cuts by gas suppliers are signaling as early as next month.
“After a very turbulent 2022 with high and strongly fluctuating prices, the situation in the energy markets has calmed somewhat,” said Michael Walser of Energie 360 Grad, formerly Erdgas Zürich, at the request of the AWP news agency. “Gas supply prices have fallen, thanks to a mild winter and significantly reduced gas consumption.”
At Energie 360 Grad, the price of the standard product has been increasing since October 2021. Until September 2021 it was only 7.0 centimeters per kilowatt hour, and in February 2022 – before the start of the Ukrainian war – it was 11.7 centimeters.
Jura and Solothurn are particularly expensive.
A year later, in October 2022, a total of 18.2 centimeters per kilowatt hour had to be put on the table. After that, the costs gradually decreased again. Since May 2023, the same customer has paid 14.6 cents.
Walser says a change in market prices has a lagging effect on gas prices. At the moment, it cannot say whether the Zurich gas supplier will reduce prices again in the near future. “But the trend is going there.” Energie 360 Grad feeds a fairly large area with the city of Zurich and 40 other municipalities, while Switzerland also has many small gas suppliers. Most are owned by cities and municipalities.
According to data from the price tracker, the average cost of an apartment building in Switzerland with an average annual consumption of 100,000 kilowatt-hours is currently around 16.22 centimeters per kilowatt-hour. However, prices for the same consumption category vary greatly from region to region.
This ranges from extremely low prices of 7 centimeters per kilowatt hour to a good maximum of 25 centimeters. Gas used for heating is particularly expensive in the cantons of Jura and Solothurn, while it is particularly cheap in Graubünden and Geneva.
CHF 105 per 100 liters of heating oil
The price of heating oil is similar to that of gas. However, unlike gas, the heater fuel tank is usually filled only once a year, usually in the fall. A homeowner with a diesel heating system currently pays around 105 francs for 100 liters with a normal order volume.
In October 2022 it was about 60 francs more. And in February 2022 – after Russian troops invaded Ukraine – about 200 francs per 100 liters had to be paid from time to time. The price of heating oil has therefore come back significantly, but still has not yet reached the previous lows. Clearly less than 90 francs were paid in the summer of 2021 and less than 70 francs in the summer of 2020.
Strong regional gradients
In electricity, the situation is completely different: According to preliminary forecasts from the industry, household costs, which increased by an average of 27 percent at the beginning of the year, will increase by another 12 percent from 2024. You should know that energy suppliers can adjust electricity tariffs for households only once a year, ie at the beginning of the year. As of January 1, 2023, electricity tariffs still have some work to do because of this. Electricity market prices also fell less than natural gas prices.
The same is true for Switzerland when it comes to electricity supply: there are strong regional differences. There have been areas where costs have more than doubled this year. The Bern-based network operator Licht- und Kraftgenossenschaft Richigen has been asking for about 175 percent more since the beginning of 2023. In contrast, BKW’s tariffs have remained more or less stable as it supplies their homes with electricity produced by their own power plants and is thus independent of the market price. (pbe/SDA)
