Airbnb is not particularly known as a communicating company. Swiss business information was only sparsely available upon request.

Now, however, a new wind seems to be blowing at company headquarters: Airbnb DACH boss Kathrin Anselm faces critical questions from the “Handelzeitung” during a visit to Switzerland. At the same time, the mattress broker gives an idea of \u200b\u200bthe local business. Airbnb’s new look is no accident because Airbnb has been criticized in many tourist countries, including Switzerland.

It is particularly interesting to take a look at the revenue the Swiss providers generate from their rooms and accommodation: they earned a total of around CHF 278.4 million last year, with an average gross income of CHF 5,300.

Airbnb charges hosts 3 percent, commissions for guests usually range from 14 to 16 percent. Almost 90 percent of landlords only rent a single property — multi-homeowners who commercially offer multiple addresses are in the minority.

Individual rooms can now also be rented on Airbnb – on average, local landlords earned 2,400 francs per year and room owners earned a total of 27.7 million francs. The average cost of a room on Airbnb, including fees and taxes, is 80 francs per night.

The report also shows where Airbnb’s strongholds are: the tourist cantons of Bern and Valais. In Swiss urban tourism, the US platform is clearly more of a niche provider.
