This is a nerve-racking subject. Do parents have priority over their childless counterparts when planning vacations?
Many believe yes. And answer that question with a flood of angry words: “If not on school holidays, please how and when should I travel with my kids?”
The truth is: Parents’ planning is limited to their kids’ vacations. But is it fair that childless people often lose when it comes to travel plans during the high season?
No, thinks Tanja* (35): “I don’t have any children, but I want to spend my holidays not only outside of the best seasons, but also in the summer months to enjoy my holidays!”
Employers should consider needs
In principle, the employer company decides who gets the holidays and when. However, it should take into account the needs of its employees. The Swiss Employers’ Association writes on request: “Employers try to take into account, as best as possible, the needs of employees with school-age children when allocating vacation time. But the important thing is that other employees are not disadvantaged.” The answer shows: This is a sensitive subject.
Even a glance at the usual transactions at Swiss companies and authorities makes it clear that there is disagreement on this issue. In the Canton of Lucerne, the Staff Ordinance stipulates that parents of school-age children have the right to use holidays during the holiday period.
Useful differences during school holidays
In Sunday’s Blick request, a spokesperson said that disagreements over parental priority were known. At pharmaceutical company Novartis, employees with school-aged children also have priority during the holiday season. Spokesperson Satoshi Sugimoto says that the fact that employees live in different cantons and neighboring countries, and therefore different school holiday times, is beneficial for conflict-free coordination: “As prices and travel volume are highest during school holidays, many employees also do not have school children to plan their holidays outside of high season. tends to work.”
In Post, Migros, Nestlé and Swisscom, certain groups are not preferred when planning a holiday. Migros Spokesperson Carmen Hefti: “The harmony of work and private life is very important to us. This applies equally to all employees, whether they have children or not.”
Childless people also have time constraints.
There are also no personnel regulations for employees in the Canton of Bern. “We also cannot imagine that such a claim would be viable,” writes one responsible person.
However, when making vacation plans, the fact that individual employees’ privacy is restricted due to family circumstances or other special circumstances is taken into account. “In individual cases, conflicts are by no means excluded. But even a rule cannot prevent it, »says the canton.
Jessica Silberman Dunant, President of the Swiss HR Association HR Swiss, points out that even employees without children sometimes have to make plans with certain time constraints: “There are childless employees whose spouse has to go on vacation at a certain time, for example when the company closes, which is usually during school holidays. It is possible.”
Solutions with common sense
Vacation planning often leads to conflict, says staff counselor and social psychologist Lucas Zehnder: “It takes a lot of tact to make the coordination feel fair to all involved.” This has the potential for frustration if childless workers have to basically pull back during school holidays. “Everyone can decide for himself whether they want children or not. That’s why I turn to the slogan: equal rights for all,” says Zehnder.
But the social psychologist emphasizes that he encourages people to meet each other in the team.
On behalf of HR Swiss, Jessica Silberman Dunant begs for reconciliation: “Solutions and compromises are found with common sense.”
