Until now, it was unclear what would become of the former Hotel Waldhaus, towering above Zurich. Since 2017, the owners have been renting out apartments temporarily and above all cheaply to students and others.
This should end in 2025. The hotel building from the 1970s needs to be replaced by a new building. Research by the online portal tippintpoint.ch shows that the Waldhaus will definitely no longer be a hotel. Instead, expensive luxury apartments will be built. The owner of Dolder, the owner of the former 4-star hotel and luxury home The Dolder Grand, is also planning this. Art collector and financier Urs Schwarzenbach (74) owns the majority of the Dolder hotel group.
However, there was no confirmation from the group. When asked by Tippingpoint.ch, an assistant said, “The dice have definitively not fallen yet.” According to the annual report, “alternative forms” are examined as well as proven uses. This could mean luxury apartments.
Construction project continues in 2024
Last year, the Zurich construction department approved a renovation concept. So nothing can stand in the way of a comprehensive overhaul.
The final construction project that can be approved will be submitted later in 2024. So today’s residents can take advantage of cheap living spaces with breathtaking views for a while. From the Hotel Waldhaus you can see the city of Zurich, the lake and even the Glarner Alps.
The reason for the decision may be that more money can be made than a hotel business with expensive condominium. And since the luxury temple Hotel Dolder Grand is not doing well financially, hoteliers are likely interested in an additional source of income. (kae)
