Only two votes were decisive when the Zurich cantonal council denied foreigners the right to vote in May. The abstention of two FDP women was decisive: Isabel Garcia (60) and Sonja Rueff-Frenkel (51). The fact that these two people did not dare to say yes made a mess. They are on the board of Secondas, an immigrant organization that has been campaigning for foreigners’ suffrage for years.

SP National Assembly Member and Secondas member Min Li Marti (49) tweeted, “So now I’m really leaving.” Selma L’Orange Seigo (43), co-chairman of the Zurich Greens, even demanded that Garcia resign from the board: You can’t be in an association with a mission to give foreigners the right to vote, and she scolded at “Tages-Anzeiger”, who didn’t support concerns at the critical moment .

Now Garcia suffers the consequences. “I’ve resigned from the executive board of Secondos Zurich,” he told SonntagsBlick. Freisinnige hopes that this step can contribute to calming the club.

Garcia resigned from his position as president of the association in March. This was after he switched from the GLP to the FDP shortly after the cantonal elections. Two bourgeois members suddenly appeared in the three-person Secondas Presidium, which provoked criticism from the left.

Board election in the fall

Garcia’s failure to support foreign voting rights also has something to do with his departure from the party. “I am first an FDP politician, only then I am the representative of Secondas,” he said after the vote. Although you used the foreigners’ right to vote in the FDP, the group was down. He abstained from the vote in order not to reject his new party.

In Secondas the board now has a general renewal selection. It was originally announced last week, but was soon delayed to autumn. Vice-President Birgit Tognella-Geertsen (55) confirms this: “We have several months to discuss this across the board, engage members and move the association forward with new strengths.”

One thing is clear already: the former SP-dominated Secondaries want to continue their non-partisan ways.
