Elegant and made for steep spaces: the new Orion from Stadler Rail.

Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn put the first six of its 37 new Orion multiple units on the rails on Thursday. They will be integrated into operations from tomorrow, Friday. The three-car multi-units were manufactured by Stadler Rail, a train manufacturer in eastern Switzerland, owned by boss Peter Spuhler (64).

The railway company announced that the investment totaled over 400 million francs, making it the largest acquisition in Matterhorn-Gotthard Bahn history. By the end of the year, twelve Orion units will operate on the prestigious route between Zermatt VS and Disentis GR. The remaining 25 Orion trains will be delivered by 2029.

According to the information received, the Orion multiple units can operate as single, double or triple traction and offer up to 438 seats, 72 of which are first class. In addition, the trains are equipped with energy-efficient propulsion components, which are characterized by low energy consumption. They can be used in the entire route network from Zermatt to Disentis. It can also overcome the very steep road between Göschenen and Andermatt.
