More companies involved in the operation of Zurich Airport are facing staffing shortages. Bad luck or homemade?

The VPOD Luftverkehr union believes in the latter. “Zurich Airport has been bubbling more and more for years,” writes a statement. Labor disputes occur in various industries almost every year. That’s not wrong: Flight crews, baggage handlers, and other professions have struggled hard for collective bargaining agreements in recent years. Business conflicts were not uncommon in an airport setting.

Ground handling providers at Zurich Airport are still struggling.

petition started

Now the VPOD is increasing the pressure. He started a “signature campaign against salary reduction at Zurich Airport”. According to the union, this has already been signed by “hundreds of employees” of ground handling providers at Zurich Airport.

Problem: While Swissport signed a new CLA with the unions last year, no rules apply to other handling companies at Zurich Airport. As a mixed economy company with a public contract, Zurich Airport does not impose any restrictions on the working conditions of the service providers it gives handling permission.

The result is an uninterrupted price war at the expense of employees. There are instances where ground service providers offer airlines 20 percent below market price. This is only possible because wages are paid lower than is customary in the region and industry. And this is for the people.

Binding rules required

The petition does not primarily demand higher fees, but rather binding rules for all ground handling providers at Zurich Airport. Zurich Airport should bind the handling permission to the companies complying with the customary working conditions in the region and the sector or concluding a collective bargaining agreement.

Some politicians are at work: a written inquiry is expected in the Zurich city council on how the city of Zurich is committed to better working conditions as a shareholder at the airport. This is against the background that the city of Zurich, as an airport shareholder, received dividends of around CHF 5.5 million in 2022.

A motion of no confidence was also submitted to the Cantonal Council in Zurich. The Canton of Zurich owns one-third of the shares of Zurich Airport.
