Silvio Berlusconi († 86) was not only a top politician, but also a successful entrepreneur. According to the Forbes 2023 list, he was one of the richest Italians in the world, with a fortune of $ 7 billion. His billion-dollar empire consists of advertising agencies, television chains, and construction companies. He combined his entrepreneurial activities in the family holding company Fininvest.

Even before completing his law degree in 1959, Berlusconi worked as a manager for a construction company. And I got a taste for it. In 1961, he founded the first construction company with a partner. As a result, he built many commercial and residential complexes for thousands of residents, mainly in the Milan area.

Your own TV for media presence

He also quickly realized that people want not only to live, but also to have fun! It went on the air with the local television channel “Milan 2” in 1972. It was the start of a great career in the media business because that’s where Berlusconi had his nose.

Berlusconi has launched private television in Italy with his film and media company Mediaset – a highly profitable network of production companies, advertising agencies, digital special interest channels and teleshopping today. He founded several television channels, including his flagship Canale 5. All the stations had one thing in common: they specialized in popular entertainment programs and gave Berlusconi a large media presence; Europe.

In order to be adequately represented in the print media, «Cavaliere» took over the Mondadori publishing house. This made it the largest in the country. Today, the company covers the entire spectrum of journalism, from the TV show «Sorrisi» to the science magazine «Focus» – the main thing is entertaining, well-written and pro-Berlusconi. His books were also printed. And he sold them in his own bookstores.

did it fall? “NO!”

Another important pillar of the Berlusconi empire is the financial advisor Mediolanum. Berlusconi thus encompassed the fields of insurance, banking and wealth management. Berlusconi even entered the retail business. With retail chains Standa, now sold to German Rewe, and Euromercato, now owned by French Carrefour.

Did the successfully spoiled Berlusconi fail there? “No!” he kept repeating. Left-wing mayors no longer allowed him to open new branches, so he had to sell chain stores. Berlusconi was once again a militant politician.

The result: self-made entrepreneur, media revolutionary and conservative populist – when it came to Switzerland he was like a mix of Silvio Berlusconi, Christoph Blocher and Roger Schawinski.
