“Currently, most of the 28 million platform workers in the EU are officially self-employed, including taxi drivers, domestic workers and food delivery drivers,” the Swedish European Council Presidency said on Monday. However, in some cases there are indications that they are actually employees and actually have additional benefits.

According to the information obtained, according to the will of the EU countries, the person who fulfills three of the seven criteria will be considered as an employee in the future. These include limited opportunities to refuse work and rules on workers’ behavior.

The plans have not yet been negotiated with the European Parliament, which has a say in the matter. They go back to a proposal from the EU Commission. It wants to ensure that millions of workers are entitled to minimum wages and regulated working hours.

Germany abstained from the EU ministerial meeting held in Luxembourg. The project was criticized by the German FDP. MEP Svenja Hahn even talked about an attack on self-employment. According to the Swedish EU Council Presidency, Germany and Spain, Estonia, Greece and Latvia do not support the project.
